5 Loaves and 2 Fish: The Story of Our Toy Drive

Updated: Nov 30

Sometimes all God needs is what’s already in our hands. The story of the boy with the five loaves and two fish reminds us that even the smallest offering, when placed in Jesus’ hands, can feed and bless many.

Our Toy Drive began ten years ago with a simple goal: to bring joy to children within Durban, South Africa during the Christmas season. In those early years, we had little—just a few toys, a handful of volunteers, and hearts ready to serve. Yet we trusted Jesus, knowing that He could take our small gifts and multiply them to bless many.

We spent those early years helping at Sunday School Christmas year-end events in underprivileged areas, witnessing firsthand the joy that even small acts of love can bring. Every smile, every laugh, every moment of excitement reminded us that God can transform what is little into something extraordinary.

Since 2018, St. Monica’s has been the home of our Toy Drive. Each year, God’s faithfulness is clear. Children arrive with sparkling eyes and wide smiles. Families feel seen, loved, and celebrated. And through the dedicated work of our volunteers, our simple offerings—gifts, meals, and programs—are multiplied in ways that only Jesus can do.

This year, on November 23rd, 2025, we once again saw the miracle at work. We brought presents, meals, and an amazing program created by our volunteers. Every laugh, every cheer, every hug reflected Jesus’ love. Just like the boy in the Bible, who gave what little he had, we offered our small gifts and witnessed God’s abundance as they became blessings to many.

We are deeply grateful for the incredible volunteers who make this possible. Every gift wrapped, every meal served, and every moment spent encouraging a child became part of God’s multiplication miracle. Their service reflects the heart of Jesus and reminds us that He works through willing hands and faithful hearts.

A decade later, the lesson remains: Jesus still provides. He still multiplies. He still touches hearts. Every child who received a gift, every family who felt seen, and every volunteer who served has been part of a living testimony of His love.

Scripture:“And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples to set before the people.” Matthew 14:19

This verse reminds us that no matter how small our offering, Jesus can take it, bless it, and multiply it for His glory—just as He has done through this Toy Drive for the past ten years.

Author’s Note:Thank you to everyone who has walked this journey with us. Whether you prayed, donated, volunteered, or offered encouragement, you became part of Jesus’ work through this Toy Drive. My heart is full of gratitude, and I pray that Jesus blesses you abundantly for every act of love.

Call to Action:If you feel led to join us for the next Toy Drive—through giving, serving, or praying—you are welcome. Every small act becomes part of something Jesus can multiply. It’s never about what we have—it’s about placing it in His hands and trusting Him to do the rest.
